La Cervical Screen & Treat Project

Cervical cancer is a disease of major public significance, with almost 70% occurring in developing countries and is the commonest female cancer. An estimated 570,000 new cases are diagnosed, and about 311,000 women die unnecessarily from cervical cancer worldwide every year. Women with cervical cancer often present in an advanced stage of the disease, where palliation is the only treatment option. This makes treatment ineffective and very expensive. It is in this regard that ACO has collaborated with the La General Hospital to promote cervical cancer prevention in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.

Protecting Women’s Health in the Heart of Accra

The African Cancer Organisation (ACO) in partnership with La General Hospital bring life‑saving cervical cancer screening and same‑day treatment to thousands of women across La, Osu, Teshie, Nungua and surrounding communities of the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.

This programme delivers free and affordable screening, early treatment, and community outreach, ensuring that more women in Accra are protected from the preventable cervical cancer disease.

What We’re Doing

  • Routine cervical cancer screening for women aged 25–65

  • Same‑day treatment of precancerous lesions

  • Training nurses and midwives to deliver high‑quality screening

  • Community mobilisation through markets, churches, workplaces and media

  • Strong referral pathways for advanced care

Why It Matters

Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among Ghanaian women, yet it is preventable. By integrating screening into everyday hospital services, we are making early detection accessible, affordable and sustainable for the women of Accra.

Our Impact

  • More women screened early

  • More precancerous lesions treated immediately

  • More families protected

  • A healthier, stronger community
