My Story

Dr. Meskerem Abera Degife is a seasoned Medical Doctor with 15 years of diverse experience in clinical care, academia, and leadership. She earned her medical degree from Addis Ababa University in 2010 and began her career at the then Adama University (now Arsi University), Asella Hospital, where she served as a General Practitioner, Assistant Lecturer, and Dean of Studies.

Driven by a passion for surgical care, Dr. Meskerem returned to Addis Ababa University for her specialty training in General Surgery, completing the program in 2016 while serving as Chief Resident in her final year. Upon completion, she then rejoined Arsi University, Asella Hospital as an Assistant Professor, where she spent three years teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students, while also serving as the undergraduate coordinator and a member of the examination committee.

Following her academic tenure, she transitioned to the private healthcare sector, working for three years before joining Menelik II Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. At Menelik, she served as Head of the Department of Surgery, where she was instrumental in initiating the hospital’s laparoscopic surgery service. In recognition of her outstanding mentorship, leadership, and skill transfer, she was honoured as the Best Attending Surgeon from the graduating class of general surgeons of 2023.

In 2024, Dr. Meskerem received a scholarship for an International Fellowship in Endocrine and Breast Surgery at CMC, Vellore, India. During her fellowship, she presented a case series on breast Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP) at the National Breast Surgery Conference ABSICON 2024.

She is a proud member of the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons (IAES) and actively working to the establishment of an Endocrine Surgery Panel within COSECSA. She also collaborates with Tikur Anbessa Hospital (TAH) as part of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) for breast cancer care.

Currently, Dr. Meskerem is the Project Lead, spearheading the African Cancer Organization’s efforts to establish a Comprehensive Breast Cancer Care Center at Menelik II Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
